O programa mostra a trajetória do advogado e jornalista Luiz Gama, um escritor renomado e um dos maiores abolicionistas do país, mesmo após ter sido vendido como escravo pelo próprio pai. E da sua mãe, a quitandeira africana, que é considerada por muitos uma verdadeira rainha e uma das articuladoras da Revolta dos Malês. Duas figuras importantes para a história do Brasil, que não tiveram suas lutas reconhecidas.
