fields ofcorn, and ploughing with horned cattle and a rude plough. Our route crossed one or two extensive plains, the principalone traversed by a river, deeply sunk, having precipitousbanks, showing the strata of alluvium, resting on the tra-vertin. We forded this stream, near tlio spot at which the partylunched, after having ridden about t\vo hours and a half. Thetravertin was here exposed several feet in depth, and formingsteps, composed of rounded pebbles, and a few shells, cemented l)y the travertin. There were many patches of alight, bright red, in the several layers of stone. Thiscolour appeared to be derived from fragments of hematite, embedded in the rock. The pebbles are of considerablevariety, many are of flint, schist, or calcedony, derived fromveins or seams, as well as from nobules. There are alsofi-agments of hematite, heavy and hard, yet susceptible ofbeing scratched with a knife, and yielding a bright, red powder;and others of a silicious rock, apparently granular quartz.

The animal had descendedthe steep bank, and fell, having missed its footing in therugged and stony bed of the rapid stream, from wliich itwas extricated with some difficulty, the baggage having becomethoroughly soaked. A bridge might readily be constructedhere; without it, the conveyance of baggage must behazardous, and sometimes impracticable. Loose fragments of the travertin, or tufo. are everywherenumerous, either thickly sprinkled over the plain or partiallycollected to facilitate cultivation. It would seem that layerafter layer separate in fragments, which, from their structure, become easily broken. About an hour and a half afterleaving the river we came to the bed of another stream, nearly or quite dry, forming a sort of ravine between lowhills of limestone, the strata of which are generally inclined, with
