Notes Bound in wooden boards covered with velvet and lined on the inner sides with embroidered silk. Forming a border round the upper cover are silver-gilt plates worked with figures, of post-Byzantine date but probably based on a 14th-century template: Rhoby (2012). The plates at the top and bottom have half-length figures of the four Evangelists (in the order John, Mark, Matthew and Luke) as well as the Apostles Peter and Paul. The plates on the sides depict scenes from the life of St Demetrius, according to Rhoby (2012), arguing against Walter (1970) who identified them as showing the overthrow of the heretics Nestorius and Noetus. In the centre of the cover is a gilt plate worked with a Deesis (the figures of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist), the nimbuses enamelled, and, above and below, the symbols of the four evangelists and cherubim. Doublures of embriodered silk.
