Sydney Exposures book and exhibition caption: Shirley Temple look-alikes, Newtown, 2 October 1934 : In the mid-1930s, the enormous success of child film star Shirley Temple popularised tap dancing classes around the world and curly locks for little girls became de rigueur. Competitions to find Shirley Temple look-alikes proved popular, but the resemblance between the film star and the entrants in this group is apparent only to their mothers.
