| Description |
On the left can be seen the Grand Canyon Lodge, the main accommodations on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. On the right is Bright Angel Canyon, one of the major side canyons of Grand Canyon. The North Rim, at an average elevation of 8,500 feet, is 1,000 feet higher than the South Rim. The vehicular access is open only between mid-May and October; the rest of the year, it can be accessed only by hiking through the snow, or hiking across the canyon from the South Rim. It is only ten miles from my vantage point to the Grand Canyon Lodge, as the bird flies. But a hike through the canyon will be at least twice that, plus a loss, then a gain, of a mile in elevation. To drive there, again possible only in summer, will be over 200 miles and five hours. |
