n du Commerce (PI. B,C, 4, 3) the Quai des Hollandais leads to the S. to the Arriere-Port,on the N.W. side of which lies the Bassin de la Marine. On theS.E. side is the Parc de la Marine (PI. B, 4, 5), tho chief promen-ade of the inner town. Thence the street runs to the S., towardsthe railway-station, turning to the W. a little farther on and cross-ing a canal. To the N.E. of the Bassin du Commerce extends thoouter harhour (comp. Plan). The chief trade of Dunkirk is in wood,grain, and wool. In the Ilue de la Panne rises tho church of Sl. John the Baptist(PI. B, C, 4; 18th cent.), in which arc a Christ by Van Dyck, aJloly Family by Guido Reni, and other interestiug paintings. â Thechurch of St. ELoi (PI. C, 4), a little to the E., a dothic ediflce olthe 16th ccnt.,has double aislos, but the whole nave has beeu undulyshortened by the removal of the flrst bays. ^un^TO^arA5!ai?^^Pbe^^ipzT^ 40 Route 4. MALO-LES-BAINS. The Rue des Vieux-Kemparts Irads from the Place du Tbeätretowards Malo-les-Bains (sce below), and near Notre Dame des Dunes(PI. C, 3), a pilgrim-resort, known also as the Petite-Chapelle, it-crosscd by the tramway (see below). Close by a Column of Viclorywas erected in 1893 on the site of the old ramparts to conimem-orate the raising of the siege of Diinkirk in 1798. The Hue Oarnot (tramwayj leads back to the harbour, near theTour de Leughenner (PI. C, 3), used as a lighthouse. Followiiig thetramway to the Place dArmes, we reach the Hotel de Ville (PI. C, 4),the flnest building In the town, -which was rebuilt in 1901 in theneo-Flemish style. It is of red and white brick, and is surmountedby a belfry 245 ft. in height. The statues around the buildingrepresent eminent natives. Tramwats (p. 38) run to St. Pol-sur-Mer (9799 inhab.), 11/2 M. to theW. of the .«tatiiin, and to Malo-les-Bains, to the N.E. of Dunkirk.
