| Description |
At Museum of Flight, Boeing Field, Seattle. The F-5 was developed in 1959 as a cheaper fighter aircraft for use primarily by US allies in NATO and elsewhere during the Cold War. It was license-manufactured in 30 countries. Due to their cheap cost, some F-5s were used within the US by the Air Force and the Navy as well, and some F-5Es were used in dogfighting exercises as Communist Bloc enemy targets due to their handling similarities to contemporary Soviet fighters. As indicated by the Y prefix, this example is the 1959 prototype. |
