Early was reinforced after his retreat tothe upper valley, and about the middle ofOctober advanced down the valley towardsthe Federal position with a force of ninethousand men and forty pieces of cannon.The Union army lay at Cedar Creek, andwas under the temporary command of Gen-eral Wright during the absence of GeneralSheridan.
