t from the ground. I tried to catch itand put it back, but only made it fly uphigher into the forest, and I saw it no more,though at times I could hear its little in-sect-like chirp. The nest was now in shadow, so I movedit a few yards out into open sunlight, andset the camera. Presently the motherbird returned, but did not see the nest andwent off. Time dragged by, and she didnot return. Alarmed and remorseful, Iput the nest back close to its former loca-tion. The suns rays came to it, but notthe mother. Meanwhile, the poor littlechick chirped hungrily, and made my heartache for it. Finally, well along in the after-noon, I heard the familiar buzz, and whenthe mother came and fed the chick, grati-tude and delight welled up in my soul.The old hummer now returned at frequentintervals, and I secured four more pictures. The following afternoon I drove my wifeup to see the wonder, if, indeed, it were nottoo late. To our joy the tiny bird was stillin the nest, and its mother most attentive.
