e Great Dipper,which once in every twenty-four hourstraces a circle around Polaris and, byits relative position in the heavens,enables the Eskimos to estimate withsurprising accuracy the lapse of timeduring the long winter night. The stars that form Orions belt weretrailing into view above the highlandsof the ba3^s eastern shore when themoon came up from behind MountBartlett, imparting to the glacier a newand indescribably magnificent aspect.However hunger was strong within us,and we did not linger to admire thescenic grandeur, but hastened on asrapidly as possible. Presently, we hadthreaded the last of the maze of cre-vasses and arrived at the glaciers east-ern wall, which we speedily descended,though not without risk of limb ; andthe first recorded crossing of BowdoinGlacier by white men or Eskimos wasaccomplished. Two hours later, after a wearisometramp over the boulder-strewed mount-ain side, we beheld the welcome lightsof Anniversary Lodge, and the Tuck-too Valley trip was ended.
