Cristobal boasts of its own independentharbor, which, from being situated at theentrance of the Canal, and consequently inthe Zone, is essentially American. It hastwo large docks—Nos. 11 and 14—whichare now in operation, and which have af-forded considerable relief to the docks inthe Port of Colon, proper, which latter havebeen unable to cope with the increased de-mands of the shipping lately. The docksare provided with a Cantilever-Crane forthe handling of ordinary cargoes, and aBrown-Hoist Coal Plant for the dischargeof colliers. For the past year or so, Cristobal hasbeen making rapid strides in the way of ex-pansion toAvards the district known as FoxRiver, which she is so steadily absorbingthat she now shows signs of finally converg-ing into Mount Hope, a village some twomiles distant from Colon, and where an ex-

This happy condition of things has beenthe result of the constant and increasing de-mand for land-space required for extra Ca-nal and Rail Road facilities, made neces-sary in consequence of the vast progress inthe work of the one, and the notable exten-sions and betterments, which the other isdaily undergoing. And just here I must notforget to mention the new Train Yard whichhas been built at Pox River, the magnitudeof which can be rapidly conceived when myreaders are told that it takes in some twelvemiles of steel track, and not less than eightyfive switches! Then, there are the new andcommodious Machine Shops, Round Houses,Turn-Tables, Coal-Chute, all of which arenow in satisfactory operation.
