His intimate association with the austereand pious Jansenists of Port Royal is traceable in the LastSupper (No. 1928), and in his masterpiece, the portraits ofMother Catherine Agnes Arnauld and his own daughter,Sister Catherine (No. 1934), painted for the famous convent.He is perhaps better known for his portraits of Richelieu.Claude Lorrain (i600-1682), the best known and mostappreciated of the seventeenth-century masters, and thegreatest of the early landscape painters, is seen in sixteenexamples. Rarely has the numbing and corrupting influence ofroyal patronage of art been more clearly demonstrated thanin the group of painters who interpreted the hollow state,the sensuality and the more pleasant vices of the courts One of the few non-dramatic compositions of Moliere is an eulogisticpoem on Mignards decoration of this dome.
