Although in this particular case the der-matitis followed the handling of leaves of the Rhus toxicodendron, itmust be borne in mind that an eruption identical in appearance maysometimes appear upon the hands, forearms and face of those whohave handled nothing poisonous so far as can be ascertained. In somecases a vesicular or bullous dermatitis occurring annually and runningan acute course may follow a severe attack of rhus poisoning. The poison ivy eruption usually runs its course in a few daysor a week, unless the patient has an eczematous tendency which mayaggravate and prolong the eruption, its course is but slightly modifiedby any of the local applications commonly used and to which amarvelous efficacv is often ascribed. A lotion of lime water or abicarbonate of sodium solution is quite as beneficial as any of theretnedies which have been most highly recommended. PLATE XVI.

Dermatitis herpetitbrniis is an inflammatory affection of theskin, characterized by polymorphic lesions, intense itching and achronic course with marked exacerbations. The disease varies inappearance in different cases, sometimes presenting erythematous discsand rings as well as vesicles and resembling the vesicular form oferythema multiforme, and again presenting large bulL^ which bear astrong resemblance to the lesions of pemphigus. In most cases the lesions are vesicular and grouped, but theinevitable scratching tends to destroy this typical appearance, and hencethe diagnosis in doubtful cases must be based upon the course ofthe disease rather than upon the appearance of the skin. The patient, though often of robust physique. usuall\- presentsa marked neurotic appearance and plainly shows the effect of loss ofsleep from constant irritation of the skin. The eruption may
