portion of theskin becomes white. In this patient, a man of nearly seventy years, the patches hadexisted for a long time and shown little tendency to increase in sizeor to appear elsewhere. As is usual, the skin around the white patcheshad assumed a slightly darker hue and. as the patient was naturallyof a dark complexion and the photograph was taken in the summertime, when the hands were tanned through exposure to the sun, thecontrast was exceptionally well marked. The patient suffered no discomfort whatever from the spotsand no treatment was employed. In faft, there is little that can bedone in such a case beyond lessening the intense contrast of color bykeeping the hands from exposure to the sun and by bleaching thedarker skin by the frequent application peroxide of hydrogen. Asidefrom its disfigurement, the only disadvantage arising from vitiligo uponthe hands is the marked tendency of the unpigmented skin to reddenand blister when exposed to the rays of a summer sun. PLATE XCIV.XANTHOMA TUBEROSUM XANTHOMA Xanthoma is a neoplastic disease beginning in the deeperlayer of the corium and characterized by circumscribed yellowishpatches or nodules of varying size. The most common form ofthe disease, called xanthoma planum, usually affefts the eyelids andappears in the form of one or more rounded or elongated dullyellow patches near the inner canthus. They may be slightlyelevated and are often symmetrical. Beyond the slight disfigure-ment they occasion no discomfort. This smooth variety of thedisease sometimes occurs in streaks following the lines of flexureupon the palms (xanthoma striatum). The nodular form of xanthoma occurs chiefly upon the lowerportion of the back and upon the extensor aspeft of the extremities.The lesions are usually numerous and vary in size from smallrounded papules to tabulated masses as large as a hens egg.
