This case is fully described in the Report on Excisions at the Headof the Femur for Gunshot Injury in Circular No. 2, S. G. 0., January,1869, Case XXX, page 32. There has been much dispute as to whoshould have the crdit of the operation. It is claimed by Dr. N. Y. Leet,late Surgeon 76th Pennsylvania Volunteers, and by Surgeon C. M. Clark,29th Illinois Volunteers. The statement of Dr. Leet is corroborated bythe entries on the register of the Tenth Corps Field Hospital, and byreports signed by Surgeon Barlow, 62d Ohio, and Surgeon Kitlinger,100th New York. That of Dr. Clark is sustained by the patient, and byhis attending physician Dr. G. D. Bailey, of Havana, N. Y., where thepatient now resides. Photographed at the Army Medical Museum. PHOTOGRAPH No. 211. Penetrating Gunshot Fracture of theCranium. An unknown rebel was admitted to Lincoln hospital on July 17, 1864with a gunshot penetrating wound of skull, received at the demonstrationagainst Fort Stevens, Washington, D. C. He died the same day. Thepost-mortem examination revealed a wound of the scalp two inches abovethe right ear, and one-half inch in diameter. The ball had entered theskull through the squamous portion of the right temporal bone, makingan orifice through both tables, one and a half inches perpendicularly, andone inch horizontally.
