Description
English: The island of Phuket on the Indian Ocean coast of Thailand is a major tourist destination. Unfortunately for those living and visiting there it was also in the path of the Asian tsunami that washed ashore on December 26, 2004. This simulated natural color ASTER image shows a 25 km long stretch of coast north of the Phuket airport on December 31, along with an image acquired two years earlier. The changes along the coast are obvious where the vegetation has been stripped away. Along the Andaman Sea Coast of Thailand, more than 4,300 people were confirmed dead in the disaster as of December 30, 2004, and thousands more who were missing may be dead as well. The images were acquired on November 15, 2002 and December 31, 2004, cover an area of 9.8 x 27.6 km, and are located near 8.7 degrees north latitude, 98.25 degrees east longitude.
