V XIIRUTH DEYO THE TECHNIC OF INTERPRETATION It has been truly said of Ruth Deyo thatshe has every attribute of a great pianist.Technic indeed, of the sort that is an art initself, temperament, a strong musical nature,and a something that appeals to an audienceand compels sympathetic attention. You maycall this something personal magnetism, or per-sonality or what you will. But it holds thelistener to the mental picture or the series ofemotional states which are being depicted atthe piano and through which we must live withthe pianist. A recital by Ruth Deyo is a richintellectual and emotional experience, and ifthe pieces happen to be by her master, EdwardMacDowell, the occasion is truly a feast to thelover of his music. MacDowell, who took deepest interest inher, felt that she really possessed the divinespark. He sent her to Europe, where shestudied for some time, making her debut in a 134

Shereceived advice and encouragement from suchmusicians as Paderewski, dIndy, Busoni, Car-reno, Bauer, and later from her admiredfriend, Charles Martin Loeffler. Everywhere she has played, both in Europeand America, Ruth Deyo has won high praise.A recent program consisting entirely of Mac-Dowells compositions, was given before theMacDowell Club of New York, and was re-ceived by the large audience of musicians withthe highest approval. If Miss Deyo did noth-ing else but give her time and talents to mak-ing the music of our greatest composer knownfrom one end of the land to the other, shewould be doing a wonderful and upliftingwork. But Ruth Deyo is not alone a highly trainedinterpreter, she is a creative musician as well.As a small girl she gave a recital of her owncompositions at the Worlds Fair in Chicago.She has already produced interesting pieces forher instrument; we shall hope to become fa-miliar with more of her work in t
