ponthe pavement in a straight line, connecting thetwo extremities of the lower semi-circle of seats. 258 POMPEIANA. PLATE LXXIII. View of the school behind the great theatre. These shght columns are of a very agreeable pro-portion, though 8 diameters, or 10 feet 10 incheshigh; being 1 foot 4 inches at the base. Theystand upon a step of 5 inches; next which is achannel, to receive the water falling from theroof. The abacus is 1 foot 71 inches square,and 3 inches thick : the intercolumniation 7 feet6 inches. The opposite entrance is from the portico of theGreek temple, of which some of the columnsare seen. The wall on the right, dividing this from the street, isvery much higher than the columns. The pulpitum is about 4 feet 10 inches high, and thedie 2 feet 9 inches broad: its cornice projects6 inches: before it is a pedestal, and behind aflight of steps, 5 feet 6 inches high. The wholeadvances forward into the uncovered space 10feet. This latter was 29 feet 3 inches by 65 feet6 inches.
