I THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO S9 relation with Apollo, god of the death-dealing shaft, and theearth goddess, Maia, associated more serious ideas with hisimage. The herm on the opposite side of the court shows the figureof a goddess. The head is lacking; the one formerly placed onit, now removed, belonged to another figure. In Greek mythol-ogy, the mother of Hermes was Maia, the daughter of Atlas ;and this relationship, by a common confusion, was transferred tothe Italian Maia, who was originally goddess of the spring, andgave her name to the month of May. The identification ofthe figure as that of Maia rests upon a number of inscriptionswhich establish the existence of a cult of Mercury and Maia inPompeii. From the same source we learn that with the worshipof these two that of Augustus was intimately associated; thereare few better illustrations of the development of emperorworship in the Early Empire. These inscriptions were found in different places, none ofthem in their original location.
