this are two bacchic masks, on oppositesides of the vase; vines laden with clusters rise in gracefularabesques above the masks, dividing the body of the vase intotwo fields, which present scenes from the vintage. One of these scenes is reproduced in Fig. 229. The vintageis interpreted as a festival of Bacchus. Above is a festoon offruits and flowers. At the sides are two boys on elevated seats,one playing the double flute, the other holding a Pans pipe inhis hands, ready to take his turn; the grapes are gathered andpressed to an accompaniment of Bacchic airs, the two playersfollowing each other with alternate strains.
