Text Appearing Before Image:
inter of great distinction, contemporaneouswith Frans Hals and Van Dyck, the work of Pieter Coddeis often confused with that of the latter painter. A masterof technique, he was surpassed by none of the men of hisday. Among his well-known pictures are: The FlutePlayer, at Haarlem ; Game of Tric-Trac, at The Hague, together with canvases at the Berlin Museum, DresdenGallery, Lichtenstein Gallery in Vienna, Belvedere Gallery,Vienna, and elsewhere. The subject here is a lady robed inblack, with collar and cuffs of white lace, white rosettes oneach arm and at her waist. There is a white feather fan inher right hand. The hair is in a crimped mass on eitherside and banned over the forehead. Behind is a browncurtain. With the left hand she catches her skirt. Thepainting of the blacks and whites is quite unusual in therealization of subtle values, and the treatment of the lace ismost dexterous. From the collection of Comte Davillier. Now in the Wilstach collection, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia.
Text Appearing After Image:
PRI\ PALAr. No. 35.MICHIEL JANSZEN MEREVELT. 1567—1641. Herr Pieter de Schiide. Counsellor of Brabant. Born 1584. Height, 48 inches. Width, 35 inches. Wonderfully characteristic is this unusually fine por-trait of the worthy burgomaster of Brabant as he is seated inhis official chair, with his state robe of black, trimmed withfur. The stamped-leather back, the carved arms, and thegeneral style of his chair are of the period, while the head, coming out of a great ruff, is sturdy, honest, and thoroughlyin the personality of the man. The sitter wears a beard andshort, black hair, while both hands are resting on the armsof the chair. The painting is solid and harmonious; theconstruction is well indicated, and the general treatment isin the mans best manner. Indeed, so strong an example ofthe great Dutchmans work has rarely, if ever, come to thiscountry. Mierevelt was born in Delft, and came to Englandon the invitation of Charles I. to paint his portrait. Healso painted portraits of royal
