Title
Post-Medieval medal of King John III of Sweden and Queen consort Catherine
Description
English: A post-medieval copper-alloy medal with white metal coating.

This circular medal is double-sided, with an image and legend relating to King John III of Sweden on the obverse, and that of his first wife, the queen consort Catherine, on the reverse. The obverse bust faces right, the king wearing a military-style garment and ruff and having a beard which extends to the basal tip of the torso. The legend, extending clockwise from 1 o'clock, reads 'IOHANNES : III : D : G :/VE : GOTH : WAND : REX :'. A beaded border surrounds this legend, with a raised and segmented rim beyond. The queen faces right, wears a loosely draped garment on her torso, beaded necklace, ruff and a flat-topped headdress. The reverse legend reads 'KATRINA : D : G : SVEC/. GOT : WAND : REGIN'. A scar at the top of the medal marks the original position of the now-missing loop.

Diameter: 36.6mm; thickness: 4.5mm. Weight: 21.2g.

John III of Sweden reigned from 1568 until his death in 1592; the queen died in 1583. The suggested date range for this medal is therefore 1568-1592, although it may well be a coronation souvenir.
