Title
Post-Medieval to Modern Devotional Medal
Description
English: A silver Jesuit devotional medal of Post-Medieval to Modern date. It is flat, oval shaped and with an integral oval shaped suspension loop at the top. One face depicts St. Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), left with hands to his breast, halo and the sun/God(?) to his left, all within an inner oval shaped border. Surrounding him is an inscription that reads PRINC.XAVERIVS.SOCIET.JESV.INDISIATONIE [XX?] PRAEDICAVIT.1611. On the opposite side of the medal is St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), in prayer right within an inner oval shaped border. Surrounding him is a legend that reads BEATVS.IGNATIVS[]NDATOR.SOCIETATIS.JESV.1611. The medal measures 23.84mm in height including suspension loop, 16.45mm in width, 2.14mm in thickness, and weighs 3.34g. This is a small devotional medal commemorating two of the founder saints of the Jesuit Church. It is uncertain precisely what event is commemorated, although the date 1611 in the Jesuit church does relate to the first Jesuit mission established in the Americas (at Souriquois, Acadia in Canada). The current example is clearly much later in production than 1611, and appears to be a modern example, perhaps dating to the 19th-20th centuries AD.
