Title |
Post-medieval, 18th century medal of Admiral Vernon |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy or pewter circular medal or medallion of post-medieval date, commemorating Admiral Vernon's victory over the Spanish at Porto Bello (in modern Panama) in 1739 AD. The medal is therefore post-1739 AD in date, and is very likely to date from the 18th century. The obverse depicts Admiral Vernon facing left holding a sword with a cannon to his left and a ship to his right. The obverse legend reads 'THE. BRITISH. GLORY. REVIV.D. BY. ADMIRAL. VERNON'. The reverse depicts six ships entering the harbour of Porto Bello and the legend reads 'HE. TOOK. PORTO. BELLO. WITH. SIX. SHIPS. ONLY'. There is a date in exergue on the reverse which reads NOV. 22. 1739. Medals commemorating Vernon's victory exist in many variations as he became a popular hero. The medal is quite worn. It measures 36.66 mm in diameter and 2.51 mm thick. It weighs 8.1 grams. It has a brown patina. |
