Title |
Post-medieval : Unidentified Object |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a cast copper alloy nutcracker of post-medieval date. The object is probably one handle of the nutcracker and has a circular terminal which would have been attached to the clamp and hinge, although the break is now very worn. Below this is a single thin collar of vertically incised lines from which a cylindrical shaft extends. At the base of the cylinder is a second collar of vertically incised lines. From the lower end of the cylinder an arm extends. The arm is D-shaped in section and curves away from the cylinder slightly as it extends before terminating in a sharp upward bend resulting in an S-shaped side view. The arm tapers in width from the cylinder to the blunted tip.
The metal is a mid reddish-brown colour and is slightly worn. The object is 61.9mm long, 9.5mm thick and weighs 11.6g. Similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database, numbers YORYM-5B6463 and IOW-7CDFB7. |
