Post Medieva medal (imprint) |

Description |
English: A Post Medieval, possible lead alloy medal dating to the later 18th century circa AD 1739 - 1800. The medal is a sub-circular disc of lead with no evidence of an attachment loop. The edges are incomplete and very worn.
The front is decorated with an incuse design which is very worn but could perhaps be a number of ships as seen on the medals to commemorate the capture of Portobello by Admiral Vernon on the 22nd November in 1739. There appears to be a mast and sail in the centre of the object towards the upper edge. The legend is also very worn which is placed circumferentially around the edge of the object. There appear to be the letters 'LLO' for Porto Bello. The opposing face is undecorated. The object has a well-developed light brown coloured smooth patina across both faces. There are other medals to commemorate Admiral Vernon's victory recorded on the database: (LANCUM-5A611D) was discovered in Lancashire and suggests that "the design was probably impressed into the lead from an Admiral Vernon medallion, which were commemorative medals made in copper alloy, to celebrate Admiral Vernon's successful capture of Portobello with only six ships in 1739, and his other victories against the Spanish." This example is perhaps similar to the design seen on (NARC-739B77) was discovered in Northamptonshire. The object measures 35.54mm in diameter, 4.59mm in thickness and weighs 33.4 grams. |
