Title
Post Medieval to Modern: Nut crackers
Description
English: An incomplete pair of cast copper alloy nut crackers, of Late Post Medieval to Early Modern dating (17th to 18th Centuries AD).

The nutcrackers consist of one complete arm, and one incomplete, joined at a single point hinge. The complete arm tapers gently from the hinge down towards an acorn shaped molded terminal, in profile the arm is bent inwards slightly. The outer face is decorated by three sets of paired horizontal ribs, and its cross section is semi circular. Below this the arm is plain until the acorn molding. The inner face has fifteen triangular perforations which run in lines of three.

The incomplete arm demonstrates an old break, just below the decorative moulding on the upper face.

It measures 101.57mm in length, 17.74mm wide and 9.94mm thick. It weighs 33.8 grams.

Several similar nut crackers have been recorded on the PAS database, including BH-197503 from Hertfordshire.
