Title
Post medieval medal of Charles II
Description
English: An incomplete post medieval silver pendant, dating to the period c. AD 1650-1700. The pendant is oval in plan with a rounded knop situated at 6 o' clock and 9 o' clock, and a worn break at 3 o' clock where a third knop would have been placed. A suspension loop is situated at 12 o clock, which contains a silver wire attachment ring. A moulded oval border circumnavigates the perimeter, within which is a portrait of Charles II facing forwards and depicted in high relief. The legend 'Carolus Secundus' is incised around the head between the border and the portrait. The reverse depicts an incised crowned royal shield with the motto 'Mal y pense qui honi soit' ('Shame on him who thinks ill of it') around the perimeter. A dark grey patina is present on the surface.

Similar examples, all made from silver, can be found in the British Museum (M.7408, M.7405 and M.7411) on which the obverse depicts Charles II facing forwards with the incised inscription 'Carolus Secundus', and the royal shield depicted on the reverse. These are all dated to c.AD 1650-1665, and it is likely they were worn to indicate loyalty the monarchy, either in the hope of its restoration or upon its re-establishment.
