DescriptionProtesters Get NBC To Cancel Stars Earn Stripes.webm |
English: PROTESTERS WIN! NBC Cancels Show! Military Families Speak Out, Veterans for Peace, the Granny Peace Brigade, Raging Grannies, Green Party, Peace Action, Code Pink, Brooklyn For Peace and other peace groups held protests outside NBC studios in New York City starting on August 13, 2012 and subsequent Mondays to protest the debut that night of the new "reality" show, "STARS EARN STRIPES," which trivializes war into a game and an entertainment.
Participants delivered to Security Chief Jim Kelly a national petition launched by Roots Action calling for the cancellation of the program and for NBC to show the real human consequences of war, signed by about 16,200. See http://StarsEarnStripes.org. The show, hosted by retired Gen. Wesley Clarke and co-starring Todd Palin (Sara's husband) pairs celebrities with military personnel where they compete to execute complicated missions inspired by real military exercises like long-range weapons fire and other deadly actions. Nine Nobel Peace Laureates issued an open letter to the Chairman of NBC Entertainment, as well as to General Wesley Clark and others involved in the new "reality" show "Stars Earn Stripes" -- calling on them to walk away from the show immediately. In the letter, the Laureates -- who include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jody Williams, Mairead Maguire and former Costa Rican President Oscar Arias Sanchez -- noted that "war isn't entertainment" and challenged NBC's promotional line that such a television program would "pay homage to the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and our first-line responder services." video by Joe Friendly |
