Nederlands: Vanaf het moment dat ze letters aan elkaar kon schrijven, was het voor Ethel Portnoy duidelijk dat ze schrijver wilde worden en niets anders. Ethel Portnoy, geboren in Philadelphia, vertrok op haar 23ste naar Parijs, waar zij van de bekende Franse literatuurcriticus Roland Barthes leerde hoe ze moest schrijven. In de Franse hoofdstad verkeerde zij in kringen van Franse en Nederlandse dichters die later als de Vijftigers geschiedenis zouden maken.
Schrijver en essayist Marja Pruis geeft een lezing over het werk van Ethel Portnoy. Daarna gaan we in gesprek met essayist, criticus en literair redacteur Carel Peeters en schrijver Marjoleine de Vos. Maker en speler Mirthe Labree draagt teksten van Portnoy voor. In 1951 trouwde Ethel Portnoy met Rudy Kousbroek en in 1970 verhuisden ze naar Nederland, waarna haar oeuvre gestaag groeide. In 1991 kreeg Portnoy de Annie Romeijnprijs voor haar literaire werk. Met haar grenzeloze nieuwsgierigheid naar menselijke drijfveren en gedrag heeft Ethel Portnoy een blijvende stempel op de Nederlandse literatuur achtergelaten. Met de titel van haar boek Broodje aap voegde Ethel Portnoy zelfs een populaire uitdrukking toe aan de Nederlandse taal. Marja Pruis schrijft voor deze editie van Publieke Intellectuelen speciaal een essay over het leven en werk van Ethel Portnoy. |
