Italiano: Statua reliquiario - La figura presenta il volto pieno e tendenzialmente realistico dello stile bakongo. La fronte è bombata, il naso diritto con larghe narici, la bocca carnosa con labbra semiaperte a mostrare i denti. Gli occhi dovevano avere in orgine inserti di vetro o altro materiale a rappresentare la pupilla. Le braccia aderenti al busto sorreggono un reliquario che copre tutta la superficie del torso e che è chiuso da un vetro. All'interno è raccolta la "medicina". Le gambe diritte con piedi ben delineati poggiano su un piedistallo a base rettangolare. Patina lucida o crostosa a seconda delle parti.
Queste figure antropomorfe con reliquario sono quelle che gli europei hanno chiamato a lungo "feticci". Si tratta di "figure dotate di potenza" che vengono usate sia per curare sia per dare la caccia ai ladri, sedurre le donne ecc. Specchi e vetri rimandano alla capacità di vedere di queste figure, in particolare in direzione del mondo dei morti. La parte più rilevante è quella nascosta, la "medicina", in rapporto alla quale la parte più propriamente scultorea funge da involucro, contenitore, mascheramento. Un defunto o uno spirito attivano la figura. |
