Text Appearing Before Image:
rst year classes next year we hope tohave second year classes and thus double the attendance. We are teaching commercial arithmetic, commercial geography, the use of typewriters and shorthand, in addition to the usualacademic branches. Near the close of the year I made a test in the shorthand, byreading a letter, taken from my pocket, which was reproducedwithout an error. We have completed two new houses, we think models, in sizeabout 58 by 60 feet, one at Cecilton and one at Perryville. Eachhave Port Deposit granite base, brick above, slate roof, abundanceof solid slate black boards and steam heat, at a cost of about19,000 each. Very respectfully yours, GEORGE BIDDLE, County Superintendent. CAROLINE COUNTY. Denton, Md., July 29, 1909. Dr. M. Bates Stephens, Secretary State Board of Education, Annapolis, Md. My Dear Sib:—I hereby submit to you the report of the SchoolCommissioners of Caroline County for the scholastic year endingMay 28, 1909, and the fiscal year ending July 31, 1909.
Text Appearing After Image:
Annual Report of the State Board of Education 161 We take pleasure in reporting that nearly two hundred morepupils have been enrolled in our schools during the past year thanany preceding one, and that the average attendance has beengreatly increased. Observation has been made that of the twenty-one teachers inattendance upon summer schools last summer, at least fifteen ofthem have raised their classification the past year through theirbetter work, and consequently have increased their salaries for thecoming year, some of them to a greater extent than the cost oftheir summer instruction. It is easy to recognize the broadening effect of the summer schoolupon the teachers and their work, and considerable advantage isgained, too, in having teachers attend different schools so as tomeet different conditions. Several trustees meetings were held throughout the county thepast year, at which topics relative to their duties were discussedby them, some visitors and a representative of the Schoo
