Description
English:
Representation of the coming of Saint James at the Feast of San Esteban (St.Stephan), Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico, 1886
Photograph of the representation of the coming of Saint James at the Feast of San Esteban (Saint Stephan), Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico, 1886, as taught to the Acomas by Franciscan priests. About two dozen Indians stand before the kisi which is in the midst of tree branches and bushes. The three-story connected cube-like buildings of the pueblo are visible in the background. Many of the people wear traditional garb including blankets draped about their shoulders. One woman carries an open parasol at left. A man in the foreground is costumed as a faux horse with rider. Onlookers sit on the roofs of the buildings.
