oots of corn, andattacks the ears when they come to maturity. Its increase on alarge scale might, therefore, produce serious mischief, which wouldhardly be compensated for by the services which it renders indestroying worms, insects, and grubs. The Grey Partridge furnishes a variety of smaller size, theMigratory Partridge, which is not known in England. It isremarkable for its vagrant character, and forms a singular con-trast to the stay-at-home habits of the genus generally. It makesits appearance in large flocks at the most diverse seasons and inthe most varied latitudes. Not migratory in the proper sense ofthe word, its journeys seem undertaken under the influence ofsome unknown cause, and are wanting in regularity and con-stancy. It does not always follow the same route, and its journeysare intermittent. This bird is of a very shy nature, and is fre-quentlj^ met with in the East (Turkey, Syria, and Egypt); it issometimes noticed in France, where it is called the DamascusPartridge.

PARTRIDGES. 417 Contrary to tlie Grey Partridge, the Red-legged, and thoseallied to it, have the tarsi provided with tubercles. The Red-legged or Guernsey Partridge owes its name to thepredominant colour of its plumage, and also to the pink shadeof its beak, tarsi, and feet. Uncultivated wastes, thinly coveredwith heath, and undulating uplands adapted to the vine, are itsfavourite resorts. In France it is principally found in the south ;in the northern departments it is not so plentiful as the CommonGrey Partridge. It is also a native of Spain and Italy, and isvery common in portions of Asia and Africa. The brush-clad mountains are its home, and in fine weather itventures even as far as the regions of perpetual snow. It isvery fond of grapes and the edible variety of snails. In someparts of France it is scarce ; the Jura, the Upper and Lower Alps, the mountains of Auvergne, and the Pyrenees are the districtswhere it is most abundant. In Greece, Turkey, and Asia Minorit is more plentifu
