Summary[edit]

Description

Retired bus bays and new bus bays at Eglinton TTC station, 2014 07 03 (3)
The old bus bays, in the background, were used for decades. Later stations, on the Bloor-Danforth line, used a similar design, where one or two routes shared a dedicated platform, but the bays were larger. A weakness in this design is that when a passenger had several bus routes that would take them to their destination, they nevertheless had to pick one platform, making it difficult or impossible to catch a bus on one of the alternate routes. Later stations built in in 1980 and later that had a large number of incoming buses, would have a waiting area where passengers could see all incoming buses.

The old platform style required a warren of stairwells. Both the platforms -- during times of day when there were few passengers, and the corridors between the stairwells to the platforms, would be hard to monitor for passenger safety.

Approximately ten years ago they were superceded by a long, "J" shaped platform. While it has many advantages over the older facility, most of it seems to have been carved out by removing several floors of a parking structure, and it is quite dark, with the only natural light coming from the bus entrance and exit.
