It is, however, plain enough that thenew party has become a very serious factor in South-ern politics. TheLanguidOld Parties As regards the Republican and Democraticparties, the campaign up to the latter daysof August had taken on no very inspiringaspects. The decisions of Wisconsin, Michigan andNew York courts, in condemnation of gerrymander-ing reapportionments, had furnished a text for thepolitical moralists on the one side, and the great in-dustrial and transportation strikes had been seizedupon as furnishing good campaign material by theapostles of the other side.
