Manyamateurs all over the world are daily tryingout their machines, and when, by reason of im-perfection in the construction of his aeroplane,or inexperience in flying, the* amateur comesto grief, the newspajier dispatches herald thedeath of another aviator. But these dis-asters will not discourage flying, or prove aserious detriment to the progress of the art.Every advance of mankind has been attendedwith hardship, and the bones of the pioneershave ever marked the trail. He made a notable tour of the Far East last autumn with Captain Baldwin and Tod Shriver, flying in Japan, China, India, the Philippines, Sumatra, Java, Singapore, Siam, Korea, Russia and Poland) Pholography by Paul Thompson, N. V. VIEDRINES, WINNER OF THE PARIS-MADRID RACE (Védrines flies a Morane monoplane. He covered the 766-mile course in an actual flying time of 12 hours, 18minutes, winning a prize of $ 12,ooo. He also competed in the International Circuit early in July, winning some prizes)
