di-cation was postponed until the next succeed-ing anniversary of the battle. On the 17thof June, 1843, an immense multitude of peo-ple, including most of the survivors of theRevolutionary War, gathered from all partsof the Republic to participate in the cere-monies. Mr. Webster, now full of years andhonors, was again chosen to deliver the ad-dress. The dedicatory oration was one of themost able and eloquent ever pronounced in theUnited States. New luster was added to thefame of the orator. The exercises were con-cluded with a public dinner, given in FaneuilHall, the cradle of American liberty. In the last years of Tylers Administrationthe State of New York was the scene of a se-rious social disturbance, arising from certaindisputed land-titles, and going back in its ori-gin to the Dutch occujiation of New Nether-land. Until the year 1840, the descendantsof Van Rensselaer, one of the old Dutch pa-troons, had held a claim on certain lands inthe counties of Rensselaer, Columbia, and Del

But at lengththe farmers were wearied with the payment,and rebelled. From 1840 to 1844 the que.s-tion was much debated in the Legislature ofNew York. In the latter year the Anti-rentparty became so bold as to attack those oftheir fellow-tenants who made the payments.The paying renters were -coated with tar andfeathers, and driven from the settlements. Of-ficers were sent to apprehend the rioters, andthem they killed. Time and agaia the author-ities of the State were invoked to quell thedisturbances, and the excitements at lengthsubsided. To the present time, however, therehas never been any formal adjustment of thedifficulty. To the same epoch of our history belongsthe beginning of the troubles with the Mor-mons.
