is occasion it wouldnot act; the loose stones in the cleft were simplylevered out of place, and 1 had to pass the axe downagain. Then ensued a few moments fatiguing sus-pension from one arm w4th but poor foothold to easethe strain. It was no go this time; I had to letmyself down and rest awhile. Next we sat on aboulder opposite the wall, and stared at it silentlyfor a space. Surely that must be a foothold ten feetup on the edge of the crack. If, while I mounted hisshoulder, the second man could hold the ice-pick ina minute fissure in the face, I might manage to stepon to the axe-head and reach the edge of the plat-form. It would at any rate prove safer than thecrack route. The plan commended itself to all, andwe placed ourselves in position. It turned out thatthe axe was scarcely necessary, for with a littledelicate balancing I reached the top hold with bothhands and dragged up to the lower step in theledge. Thence to the platform was an easy matter, and we all began to breathe freely.
