Summary[edit]
DescriptionRoman Bath (5341380231).jpg |
When Rome colonized England, the Romans were aware of the hot water springs of the area, and developed a bath complex here, calling it Aquae Sulis ('Waters of Sulis," Sulis being a Celtic goddess the Romans associated with their own Minerva). After the Romans left, the bath was forgotten, until the Victorian era, when the bath was rediscovered, a modern structure was built over the Roman ruins, and people flocked here for the reputed therapeutic qualities of the hot water. Here, hot water continues to pour through a Roman archway. |
