English: An incomplete copper alloy openwork swastika plate brooch dating to the Roman period (AD 100 - AD 300).
The brooch is swastika shaped, pointing clockwise with rounded edges. The upper face is decorated in the centre with a large ring and dot design, which is filled with red enamel. The reverse is undecorated and has a single pin lug attached to one of the arms. At the opposite end, there is the remains of a catchplate. The pin is missing. The metal is worn and dark green in colour. The brooch is 26.9 mm long, 27.3 mm wide and 7.2 mm thick (with the lug included, and 2.2 mm without). It weighs 7.5 g. Hattatt (p. 357, fig. 216, no. 1145) also depicts an undecorated example and dates it to the 2nd-3rd century AD. |
