He mar-ried Princess Dagmar, daughter of the King of Den- 56 RUSSIA THEN AND NOW mark, 1866, at 21 years of age. He died Novemberi, 1894. His son, Czar Nicholas II., was born May, 1868,enthroned 1894; on November 26, 1894, he marriedPrincess Alix of Hesse, a grand duchy and state of theGerman Empire. She is a granddaughter of QueenVictoria.

VII Visiting tKe Poor Peasants COUNT PAULS elder brother, Count VladimirBobrinskoy, head of the Red Cross Associationof the district, was in charge of the distributionfor the relief of the famine sufferers, and as Chiefof the Zemstvo he directed all measures for govern-mental assistance. United in constant labourswith his brothers and a sister, a beautiful, court-eous lady, hospitals and soup kitchens, bakeriesand orphanages were maintained throughout theentire district. My first day passed in visiting asmany of these active agencies as were within easyreach. These good people during the entire winterhad been feeding and clothing their peasants,ministering to their sick and providing for the deadand dying among them, and for a long time theydid all this out of their private resources. I wasshown a large bakery, in which good rye andwheat loaves were being baked
