He mar-ried Princess Dagmar, daughter of the King of Den- 56 RUSSIA THEN AND NOW mark, 1866, at 21 years of age. He died Novemberi, 1894. His son, Czar Nicholas II., was born May, 1868,enthroned 1894; on November 26, 1894, he marriedPrincess Alix of Hesse, a grand duchy and state of theGerman Empire. She is a granddaughter of QueenVictoria.

My first day passed in visiting asmany of these active agencies as were within easyreach. These good people during the entire winterhad been feeding and clothing their peasants,ministering to their sick and providing for the deadand dying among them, and for a long time theydid all this out of their private resources. I wasshown a large bakery, in which good rye andwheat loaves were being baked
