Summary[edit]
DescriptionSS CERAMIC of the White Star Line (3307505671).jpg |
English: SS CERAMIC, of the White Star Line, was built in 1913 and was active on the Australia route. In 1934 CERAMIC was sold to the Shaw, Savill & Albion Line. In 1942 the ship was enroute to Australia when it was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean by a German U-boat. There was only one survivor of the 656 onboard. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio Collection. Sam Hood (1870-1956) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 72-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century. |
