Title
SUSS-A83228 PAPAL BULLA
Description
English: A quarter fragment of a lead Papal Bulla, dating to the Papacy of one of the individuals named Urbanus: I-VIII (c. 222-1644 AD). It is most likely Medieval in date. The obverse of the bulla includes the remains of the inscription invoking St. Peter and St. Paul: [SPA]SPE. The top of a beaded halo can be seen on the fragment, from one of the heads of the Saints. The remains of the reverse includes a portion of the inscription identifying Urbanus, which includes an upper horizontal line: U[R] and a second horizontal line below the first: BAN[US]. A third horizontal line would have indicated which Urbanus was using this bulla, but that section is lost. A similar complete example can be seen on the PAS database: HAMP-CDC9E0.
