67 My Experiences of the Island of Cyprus. spoilt by the windows being filled up withvery rough plaster-work. The tracery in the great west window isas perfect as when it was first executed, andis the only one filled with glass. TheLusignan Kings of Cyprus were crownedKings of Jerusalem at St. Nicolas from thetime of Huges III., 1269, till Jacques II.,1460. In 1546, and again in 1568, Fama-gusta suffered severely from earthquakeshocks and cyclones, which destroyed largepieces of the walls; the buttresses andpinnacles of St. Nicolas suffered greatly fromthese visitations. Rough repairs were hastilymade ; the prosperity of Venice was on thewane, and all money was required forstrengthening the fortifications against theexpected attack of the Turks. In 1571, theTurks ejected its rightful worshippers, andturned it into a mosque, changing its nameto Santa Sophia. The religion of theMohammedans allows no furniture in theirmosques, so the interior of the building looksvery bare and naked. 68

Pamagusta and Salamis. 55. Peter and Paul. This church is situated a short distanceto the west of St. Nicolas, near theLusignan Palace. It was built during thereign of Pierre I. (1359—1369), by a certainmerchant of Famagusta, Simon Nostrano, from the proceeds of a single voyage toSyria. The interior is very similar to thatof St. Nicolas, except that the clerestory-windows are much smaller, and only consistof one light, and the church is wider inproportion to its length. All the windowsbeing filled up, one has to leave the doorwide open to be able to see anything at allof its interior. It is further spoilt by having a wall built across it to divide the barley and wheat, it being now used as a grain store. As will be seen by the illustration, it is a very severe and plain structure outside, and its very massive construction probably accounts for its present good state of preservation. It lacks the airy grace and embellishment of St. Nicolas. Of this church, Enlart says : 69 My Experien
