ATRIDM OF TUE HOCSE OF CERES AT POMFEII. The preceding account of the differentrooms, and especially of the arrangement ofthe atrium, tablinum, peristyle, &c., is bestillustrated by the houses which have beendisinterred at Pompeii. The ground-planof one is accordingly subjoined.

GnOUND-PLAN OF A P.0MA1T HOUSE. Like most of the other houses at Pompeii,it had no vestibulum according to themeaning given above. 1. The ostium orentrance hall, which is six feet wide andnearly thirty long. Near ;the street-doorthere is a figure of a large fierce dog workedin mosaic on the pavement, and beneath itis written Cave Canem. The two largerooms on each side of the vestibule appearfrom the large openings in front of them tohave been shops; they communicate withthe entrance hall, and were therefore pro-bably occupied by the master of the house.2. The atrium^ which is about twenty-eightfeet in length and twenty in breadth ; itsimpluvium is near the centre of the room,and its floor is paved with white tesserae,spotted with black. 3, Chambers for theuse of the family, or intended for the recep-tion of guests, who were entitled to claimhospitality. 4.
