This is of several thick-nesses and is impervious to rain, and serves passablywell in case of need as a helmet or a dish to hold wateror food. The women wear a short loose jacket orcamisa and the saya, a piece of cloth wound round thehips and the corner tucked in at the waist to secure it.The womans hat is made of palm leaf or rattan, butwith a broad brim, so that it serves as an umbrella incase of need. I have seen two women shelteringthemselves under one hat as they crossed the street inthe rain. The hat also serves as a basket, and in themarket the women display their fruits or flowers orfish upon it, placed on the ground before them. TheIndian governors of the towns and their council ofprincipal men, when they attend church together or onother state occasions, wear short coats of black broad-

Many of the Indian women of Manilawear low slippers on their bare feet. These are toonarrow for the whole foot, and the little toe is left totravel in the mud outside. The house of the Philippine native is as simple ashis clothing. Tall posts of some durable timber are planted firmly in the ground, and to these, six or eightfeet above the earth, are lashed or framed the floorsills of the house. The walls are of palm leaf tied toupright timbers with rattan. The roof is also of palmleaves, thick enough to be stormproof. The floor isusually of split bamboo, with open cracks which allowthe dirt to fall through. Openings are left in the wallsfor windows and a door, and these are closed againststorm by shutters of the same materialsas the walls. The fire place is ordi-narily a box filled with earth uponwhich the fire is built, the smokemaking its way out
