Summary[edit]

Description

Page 104 of brochure Seattle and the Orient (1900). This page includes text plus a pair of photos with decorative background jointly captioned as "Some inside views of the Vulcan Iron Works". The pictures are also individually captioned:

  • Upper: Big engine under course of construction
  • Lower: Interior of machine shop
According to the previous page of the same brochure, Vulcan Iron Works was located at Fifth Avenue and Lane Street, roughly in the middle of what is now Chinatown within Seattle's International District, and covered an entire city block. At that time, the Chinese neighborhood was a bit further west and north. The Industrial District now begins a few blocks further south, at Dearborn. In 1900, the area around Fifth and Lane had not yet been regraded; the Jackson and Dearborn regrades were just about to happen, but had not yet occurred.
