Summary[edit]

Description

Sentimental Journey is a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress bomber originally developed for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), and is one of 12,731 produced between 1936–1945. Though most B17s served in Europe due to their relatively short range, this particular model and 11 others served in the Pacific theatre of WWII immediately after production.

The B17 was operated by a crew of 10, and was outfitted with 13 .50 calibre M2 Browning machine guns, and carried a bomb payload of 8,000 pounds. The aircraft has a range of 2,000 miles, top airspeed of 287 mph, and a service ceiling of 35,600 ft. It is equipped with 4 Wright R-1820-97 "Cyclone" turbosupercharged radial engines, 1,200 hp each.

After the war, Sentimental Journey was re-purposed for aerial mapping, search and rescue, and eventually sold to a private company who used it as a water bomber. In 1978 it was donated to the Commemorative Air Force where it was slowly restored to its original military configuration over a period of many years. Based out of Mesa Arizona, today it takes part in over 60 air shows and sees about 80,000 visitors per year.
