m Sii- Colin Campbell who was knighted in 1286—chief of a great Highland clan, is an author and poetas well as a politician. He is better known as theMarquess of Lome. As such he married in 1871Princess Louise, the sixth child and fourth daughter ofQueen Victoria, being at the time the Liberal Memberfor Argyllshire. For five years—between 1878 and1883—he filled the exalted post of Governor-Generalof Canada. He sat as a Liberal-Unionist in th^ House ofCommons from 1895 until he succeeded to the dukedomon the death of his father in 1900. But though he wasconstant in liis attendance during those five years henever spoke in the House. Yet he is an excellentspeaker, with much of the fancy and imagination ofthe Gael. He is also a thinking, earnest man, desirousof grappling with important questions, such as ImjjerialFederation, in which he is especially interested. ^ / £^ /^z STATUE OF RICHARD I. The memorial to King Richard the First, better knownas Cceur de Lion, in Old Palace Yard, is a strikingexample of equestrian statuary. It is tlie work ofMarochetti, an Italian who lived in Paris, and, ha\ingto fly for his part in the French Revolution of 1848,settled in London. There was little of the ruler of his people in KingRichard. He was more the chivalrous knight-errant,wandering in quest of adventures to show his prowessat arms and his high-souled generosity and self-sacrifice.His darling ambition was to relieve the Christianpilgrims to the Holy Land from the oppressions of theTurk. In 1192 he led his gallant troops to the verywalls of Jerusalem, only to be forced to turn home-wards again, so wasted were his followers by fightingand disease. Nevertheless, he was strong enough tobe able to conclude a treaty wdth Saladin that forthree years, three months, three days, and three hourspilgrims should have free access to the Holy Sepulchre.
